HAND + MILL WOVEN TEXTILES

“relationship & balance”

All of Holly’s work begins life as hand woven samples, designed and developed in her garden workshop in South-East London. Manually winding warps around wooden pegs, threading up the looms, hand washing and finishing, are all parts of the process, making her hand woven pieces hold a distinct mark of the maker. Hand weaving is slow, so I there is a limit to what can be physically produced, however this fits with Holly’s commitment to slow design, conscious consumerism and the desire to produce work that will resonate and connect beyond the ideals of fashion or trend.

This meditative manufacture is the basis of all that Holly produces; weaving small batches, one offs, the occasional commission and endless swatches, experiments and developments.

Alongside her hand-weaving practice, Holly enjoys working with a 200 year old weaving mill in the UK to make limited runs of some of her woven designs. The LOVE blanket was the first piece that was produced in this way in 2012.

This relationship between hand and mill production allows her to find balance between weaving, developing and sampling new woven designs. In turn, this gives the opportunity to produce in sustainable quantities and to grow her practice and range.

All mill woven work starts life as a hand woven swatch on Holly’s workshop looms before being sent to the mill for careful and traditional manufacture.
